Defined Tag: Fire Alarm Pull Station.
A fire alarm pull station is a simple thing, but it has a huge role in fire detection and relief. These little boxes, usually red, can be found in most if not all public buildings. The premise is simple; bystanders who observe or think they observe a fire can use the alarm pull station to alert the fire department and summon the firemen. The methods vary between the different alarm pull stations; some only require that you pull a T shaped handle to alert the fire department, while with others, it takes a two step process, no doubt to prevent the handle being pulled accidentally. Some, for example, may require that you break the glass first. Others ask that you push up a lever or turn a handle.
The methodology varies greatly from one fire alarm pull station to the other, but their use is always the same. The alarm pull station gives bystanders who spot a fire a direct link to report the fire (or smoke, or other sign of fire) to the fire department, without having to call emergency or even access a telephone.
Just like fire alarm systems within your own house, the fire alarm pull station is connected to a fire alarm control panel; only where the detection units in your house are automatic--that is, they go off when they sense a fire, or, in the case of a smoke alarm, when large concentrations of smoke indicate that there may be a fire. Fire alarm pull stations, on the other hand, are manual; they go off only when you pull the handle. A building may have smoke alarms and heat detectors and fire sprinklers installed, but they are most often *not* connected to the fire alarm pull station. Pulling the handle at the pull station will not set off the smoke alarms or sprinkler systems, and similarly, while the smoke alarms and other detection units may be connected to the control panel, and from there to the fire department, they are usually not connected through the fire alarm pull station.
